FAQs

Camera Controls

Is lens aperture adjustable?

With all currently available iPhones and iPads, lenses have apertures that are fixed. This is a constant. Lens aperture information could be viewed via Camera Specifications in Settings.

Are manual controls supported with Dual or Triple Camera?

Manual focus control, manual exposure control, and manual white balance are not supported with Dual Camera and Triple Camera. However, any of these controls could still be locked or reset back to auto. Both tap to focus and tap to expose are supported with Dual Camera and Triple Camera.

Why is maximum exposure duration is limited to 1/3, 1/2, or 1 second?

Camera M strictly follows native device hardware limits. iPhones and iPads have 1/3, 1/2, or 1 second as the native maximum exposure duration. Whenever longer times are seen in other applications, it is a fusion of multiple buffers to create the illusion of longer exposure times.

Focus

Where is Focus Tracking supported?

Focus tracking is supported with all devices, with all rear-facing cameras running iOS 11 or later. Selfie cameras do not support focus tracking.

Why is the wide-angle photo is in focus but telephoto image is out of focus in Dual Photo mode?

The wide-angle lens can focus much closer than the telephoto lens. Making sure the overlay guide is not lit in red would ensure both images to be in focus.

Flash

Is flash firing supported with manual exposure?

Flash firing is disabled with manual ISO and Duration priority modes.  However, torch function with adjustable brightness is available.

Zoom

Where is digital zoom supported?

Pinch-to-zoom is supported with all devices, all cameras, all image formats, except with RAW image format. Also, zooming is disabled with Depth and Dual Photo modes.

Aspect Ratios

Are 16:9 and 1:1 image aspect ratio options available?

iPhone and iPad camera sensors have a native 4:3 aspect ratio, which results in final images having the same proportions. Therefore, any other aspect ratio such as 16:9 or 1:1 would end up being a crop out of the original 4:3 ratio. We believe these other ratio options could be achieved after the capture in editing. The native Photos app is an excellent choice for non-destructive cropping options. Camera M focuses on capturing all the information from the image sensor.

Depth Mode

What is Portrait Effects Matte?

Portrait Effects Matte (PEM) is created using Depth Map to created a higher resolution binary map to separate the subject and the background. This is much suitable for close up portraits.

RAW capture

What is the difference between RAW and RAW+JPG formats?

On iPhone and iPad, a RAW DNG file consists of two main parts: The actual raw data file and a processed image for preview purposes.  In RAW, the preview image is very low resolution to save space.  This could be ideal for shooting an immense amount of RAW files for batch processing. In RAW+JPEG, Camera M included a high quality, full-resolution JPEG.  This gives the ability to extract a proper JPEG to share if needed.

Why do RAW images appear low resolution in Camera Roll?

These are images captured in RAW (only) format. This is the format with a low-resolution preview image to save space. These images appear low-quality in preview; however, the actual raw DNG part of it is indeed intact and untouched. So it is still a full resolution RAW image.  If this is bothersome, the RAW+JPEG option will yield to give full-resolution previews with added benefits.

Filters

Are live filters offered?

As a camera app that is focused purely on obtaining the best image quality out of your device, we believe filters belong in post-editing; therefore, no live filters are offered within the app.

Image Orientation

Why are captured images saved in the wrong orientation?

Having the interface rotation lock causes landscape images to be saved in portrait orientation. This could be fixed by turning off the rotational lock through Control Center.

Image Editing

Is image editing available?

Camera M is solely focused on capturing the best. For post-editing, we believe there are many excellent choices out there, including the native Photos app.

Video Capture

Is there a video capture option?

Our developer team specializes in photography. We are passionate about photo capture exclusively, and we do believe video capture requires an entirely different approach.

Image Processing

What is Max Image Processing?

This significant setting will enable Deep Fusion and Smart HDR support for iPhones 11 and later.

iPhone XS and iPhone XR gain Smart HDR support with the best A12 Bionic processor has to offer.

Other iPhones and iPads still benefit by ensuring maximum image quality with better noise reduction, image stabilization, and additional processing.

This setting does not affect standard RAW image format and may cause photo saving to be slower. Not available on Burst and Bracket modes. Also not available with custom exposure mode - when ISO and exposure duration are set explicitly.
