Focus Screen

Camera M Focus Screen is the single location for all focus related functionality, and it is packed with powerful controls and tools.

Overview

iOS Focus Modes

iOS camera hardware has three focus modes:

  1. Auto focus continuous

  2. Auto focus

  3. Locked focus

By default, when first launched, Camera M is in auto focus continuous mode. Depending on the scene changes, camera hardware continuously adjusts focus.

When focus mode is locked, focus distance gauge is shown in orange color. Focus lock/auto button turns to a lock symbol to indicate the focus mode is locked.

Tap-to-Focus

Simply tap inside camera preview area to choose a specific focus point. Overlay for this point is illustrated by a square with a point in the middle to indicate that only the focus point (not the exposure point) is set. If focus tracking is enabled, focus point will follow the subject during scene changes. For more details on focus tracking, please check below under Focus Tracking section.

Tap-to-Focus is not available under certain circumstances, for example, with Ultra Wide camera or Selfie camera.

Focus Distance Adjustment

  • Touch inside camera preview area and drag up or down to adjust focus distance. Focus distance gauge indicates the current focus distance compared to the extents.

  • Swipe or flick up or down to use intertia to move focus distance in bigger strides.

  • If Magic Trackpad is used on iPad, swipe up or down using two fingers to adjust focus distance.

This also resets the focus point, if set.

Focus distance adjustment is not available under certain circumstances, for example, with Ultra Wide camera or Selfie camera.



Focus Presets

Two focus presets are a convenient way to quickly adjust lens position depending on the shooting scenario.

  • Macro - Instantly moves and locks the lens to nearest focus distance. This is convenient for macro photography when the closest possible lens position is crucial.

  • Scene - Instantly moves and locks the lens to farthest position. This is convenient for landscape photography when focusing needs to be locked at the farthest position.

Focus presets are not available under certain circumstances, for example, with Ultra Wide camera or Selfie camera.



Focus Reset

There are multiple ways to reset focus mode back to auto while resetting focus point (if set) on Camera M.

  • Touch and hold inside camera preview area.

  • Tap on Focus lock/auto button.

  • Touch and hold on Focus button on Control Center.

  • If a keyboard is used on iPad, press command + R.

Focus Peaking

Full-screen focus peaking is available as a tool to instantly highlight areas in focus. Tap on Focus peaking button and use focus distance adjustment to acheive the desired focus area accurately.

Focus Peaking is not available under certain circumstances, for example, with Depth mode or Dual/Triple Photo mode.

Magnifier

Camera M includes a magnifier to further help manual focusing. This incredibly powerful tool has a 4x magnification and has the ability to pan to any location inside the camera preview.

  • Tap Magnifier button to display the magnifier. It will appear at the focus point, if previously set one exists.

  • Touch inside the magnifier and pan to the desired location.

  • Tap inside the magnifier to toggle focus peaking on and off.

  • Adjust focus distance.

Magnifier is not available under certain circumstances, for example, with Depth mode, and Dual/Triple Photo mode.

Focus Tracking

Focus tracking is a great tool make sure the subject is always in focus. This feature uses intelligent AI to inspect the complete scene and detect any changes to the subject.

Simply tap on the subject. Focus tracking is ensured by the focus point overlay following the subject with continuously while refocusing on the subject. To stop focus being tracked, reset focus by changing the focus distance or resettings focus mode back to auto by using several methods listed above under Focus Reset.

Tips

  • Make sure the subject is in contrast to the background.

  • Make sure the scene is well lit.

  • Make sure the subject is unique in the scene.

  • Make sure the exposure duration is not long.
