How to Turn It On

We made it simple to turn on the 48-megapixel setting by implementing it within the camera picker, which is always within reach. 12 and 48 MP choices are displayed only when the main wide-angle camera is chosen.

Image Formats

Camera M always offered a large plethora of image formats. As the tradition continues, we made sure 48-megapixel capture is capable with many of those image formats as possible, otherwise impossible from hardware.

  • ProRAW
12-bit RAW, linear DNG format with optional additional HEIF preview image.
    ~90 MB file size

  • HEIF
Modern HEIC codec with normal compression
    ~6 MB file size

  • HEIF HIGH
Modern HEIC codec with minimal compression for the highest image quality
    ~30 MB file size

  • JPG
    JPEG codec with normal compression
    ~6 MB file size

  • JPG HIGH
JPEG codec with minimal compression for the highest image quality
    ~11 MB file size

  • PNG
Lossless format only suitable for certain applications
    ~70 MB file size

  • TIFF
Lossless format, best quality for a processed format.
    ~187 MB file size

Limitations

There are limitations for 48-megapixel capture where the system will step down to binned 12 megapixels for various reasons such as hardware limitations. The system will default to 12 megapixels for these conditions:

Formats

  • Standard RAW

Exposure

  • Manual exposure mode – Where ISO and exposure duration are set explicitly by the user.

Shooting Modes

  • Burst

  • Bracket

  • Depth

  • Live Photo

  • Triple Photo

48 Megapixel Indicator

Since there are limitations for 48-megapixel capture, we decided to implement an indicator, near the file format badge, to keep you always informed of the final image resolution.

This indicator only appears if the next captured image will be in 48 megapixels. For example, if the flash is about to fire, the indicator fades out.

TIFF Limitations

Even though 48-megapixel capture is available in TIFF format, there are several additional limitations that apply:

  • File size — Each image is around 187 megabytes in file size.

  • Color Space — Currently, these images are only available in sRGB color gamut instead of P3 wide color. We believe this is a temperorily limitation which would be fixed in the future.

  • Processing — Deep Fusion is not available with this particular capture and we recommend using this only during good lighting conditions where you need maximum details in a processed image format.

We will update this section as we have more answers or fixes to these limitations.

We hope you enjoy this update and helps you capture incredible photos! For any questions or feedback, please reach us at contact@camera-m.com.
